I’ve decided that I’m going to try to stick to a maintaining ‘positive hobby karma’ for the year. What does that mean? Well like many in this hobby I have a tendency to buy way too much and already have a backlog of projects that I’ll probably be dead before I will have time to finish assembling let along painting them all. Just properly auditing what I have stashed away probably wouldn’t be too good for my sanity so what to do about it?
Committing to not buying anything probably isn’t realistic, but being more sensible about what I buy undoubtedly would be and so this is what I am aiming to do:
- When I do consider buying something new, I’m going to focus on am I actually going to paint or play within within 3 months of purchase? If not then park buying it.
- Each month, I’m going to add up the number of miniatures that I have painted, sold or donated to a worthy cause and then subtract the number of new things I have bought – the net figure being my ‘hobby karma’ score and I’m going to aim to try to keep this net positive each month and failing that at try to balance for the year. If I really want to buy a big new GW box game then I’ll need to have either painted like a daemon or have had a serious clear out & give away.
So how did I do for January?
1 x Iron Warriors – Leviathan Pattern Siege Dreadnought
2 x Secret Weapon Miniatures Tablescapes Dungeon Mines sets
2 x Uruk Hai
1 x Skaven Plague Monk
10 x Mantic Sci-fi zombies
Net hobby karma as of beginning Feb is therefore +16 – let’s see how long I can maintain a positive streak for!
